Computer.lab is a new ICT and Computing club at Loreto High School, Chorlton. The club is run by Martyn Jones, a former Head of ICT who now is employed at Loreto as a 'Programming and New Technologies Technician'. The main purpose of this role is to support the ICT Department in implementing the new national Curriculum in ICT with it's emphasis on enabling pupils as 'Digital Creators' rather than 'Digital Users'.
Computer.lab currently has two main strands: hardware control programming and games creation. Both of these are aimed at developing computer programming concepts and skills in the Year 8 pupils who attend the club, albeit using two very different approaches. The control programming is done using Raspberry Pi computers and the text-based Python programming language, whereas the games creation uses the Game Maker software with it's drag and drop graphical programming environment.
Future Computer.lab activities will include using Lego Mindstorms and NXT products for robotics and control and using the Arduino microcontroller to create some embedded control systems.
